Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
Exposure to sunlight, weight gain or loss, and the aging process all take their toll on the previously natural and healthy appearance of our skin, causing it to loosen, sag, and wrinkle, especially on the face. A facelift is an artistically performed surgical procedure intended to correct these tell-tale signs of aging and restore your skin’s smooth and youthful appearance by tightening the skin and underlying muscles of the cheeks, jowls, and neck. The procedure is accomplished with incisions made inconspicuously around the ear. After the excess skin is lifted, it is removed, carefully tailored around the ear, and gently tightened. The facelift procedure may take several hours. At Dr. Funk's Lancaster, Camp Hill, and York offices, our goal is to produce a natural-looking, rejuvenating result, which can be subtle or dramatic, depending on the severity of aging.
This artistic procedure should only be performed by a skilled and experienced aesthetic plastic surgeon. Realistic patient expectations are essential to achieving success with all cosmetic procedures, and facial plastic surgery is no different. The effects of a facelift typically last many years but, like all cosmetic procedures, will not stop further aging. Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Eyelid surgery is designed to correct droopy, sagging upper eyelids or puffy lower eyelids that can make you appear tired or older than your true age. An eye lift, or blepharoplasty, can restore the skin around your eyes to its natural, youthful appearance, reducing the signs of aging. While an eye lift is usually a cosmetic procedure, occasionally the removal of the excess skin can improve vision impaired by sagging upper eyelid skin and meet criteria qualifying for reimbursement by certain medical insurance carriers.
The upper eyelid procedure begins with a small incision made along the eyelid crease. Excess fat, muscle, and skin are then gently trimmed away from the eyelid. This outpatient surgery typically takes about one hour and is performed for patients from Harrisburg, Camp Hill, and surrounding areas under sedation or general anesthesia by Dr. Funk.
The lower eyelid incision can either be placed inside the eyelid (transconjunctival) or inconspicuously under the eyelashes (subciliary). Sometimes, remaining fine lines can be softened using a cosmetic laser or chemical peels. Eyelid surgery results are long-lasting, although aging will continue in the future. The final effects provide a rested and youthful appearance. For more information about eyelid surgery, please contact Dr. Funk, serving Harrisburg, Camp Hill, and nearby communities.
Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
Nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, refines the shape or size of your nose. It helps to cosmetically alter the width of the nasal tip, reshape a nasal hump, adjust the shape of the nostrils, or shorten or lengthen the nose. The procedure can also correct for crookedness, injuries, and breathing abnormalities that arise due to problems with both the internal and external structures of the nose. The results of rhinoplasty can increase your confidence and improve the balance and proportions of your face. This is one of the few cosmetic procedures that can be performed as early as the mid-to-late teenage years.
During the rhinoplasty procedure, which is performed under either general anesthesia, sedation, or local anesthesia, incisions are usually made inside the nose, along the rims of the nostrils. Because the incisions are made in inconspicuous locations, there should be virtually no visible scarring. Through these incisions, the bones and cartilage of the nose are reshaped. If breathing problems are present before surgery, these can often be corrected during the surgery. In this case, medical insurance may reimburse portions of the surgical cost. Rhinoplasty surgery can take one to two hours to perform. At our Lancaster, Camp Hill, and York offices, our goal is to produce natural-looking, rejuvenating surgical results. Brow/Forehead Lift
Horizontal lines on the forehead and vertical creases above the nose can make you look tired and even angry. The forehead lift can make the face look years younger by tightening and lifting forehead skin, thereby softening and, often, eliminating wrinkles and unnatural expression lines. The end result is a more refreshed, youthful appearance. The browlift can be performed either traditionally or endoscopically, depending on the severity of aging.
During an endoscopic forehead lift (usually chosen by patients with only mild to moderate brow wrinkles), an endoscope (a small surgical instrument inserted below the skin, attached to a camera and a TV monitor in the operating room) allows the surgeon to operate on the skin and underlying muscles. The surgeon can then lift, tighten, and reshape the forehead, eyebrows, and even the upper eyelids. The forehead lift is often combined with other facial cosmetic procedures for a more comprehensive change.
Neck Sling/Neck Lift
The neck sling is one of the most recent advances in the fight against early relaxation of the skin of the neck. This procedure is often combined with face and neck liposculpture. Through a small incision behind each ear and under the chin, excess fat of the lower face and neck can be contoured and removed. The neck muscles are then tightened using either a permanent suture or a suture that slowly melts away, leaving the face and neck with a new, youthful, and natural contour. Fine wrinkles may also be improved.
This procedure is more commonly reserved for younger to middle aged patients with signs of premature aging of the neck. Candidates for this procedure often enjoy a reduced period of recovery. This procedure typically takes one to two hours to perform under sedation or local anesthesia.
Facial Liposculpture
The neck and cheeks often appear full and without natural contours because of excess fat. Such pockets of fat are often resistant to diet and exercise, thereby making liposculpture an excellent surgical option. During this procedure, tiny incisions are made, and the excess fat is gently suctioned away, sculpting the lower face and neck. This produces a noticeably slimmer, more refined and naturally shaped profile. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia or sedation and typically takes less than an hour to perform.
Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Few surgical procedures restore self-confidence as dramatically as does surgery for prominent ears in a younger patient. Ears that are especially large or protruding can have a negative impact on one’s self-esteem. Ear sculpting (or otoplasty) can change the size and shape of ears for people of all ages – making overly large ears smaller or placing protruding ears closer to the head – but this reconstructive surgery is most commonly performed on children between the ages of 8 and 20.
An otoplasty begins with inconspicuous incisions made behind and on the ears. Excess cartilage is either removed or reshaped, and the remaining cartilage is sutured into place. Ear surgery takes about two hours to complete. This outpatient procedure can be performed under either general anesthesia or sedation. Most normal activities can be resumed within about 10 to 14 days, and strenuous activities within about one to two months. This procedure may qualify for reimbursement by some medical insurance companies.
